Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke Withdraws EFCC Suit After Tinubu’s Intervention
Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has disclosed that he has instructed the Attorney‑General of the state to withdraw the suit filed against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of the state government’s account. This decision, he explained, follows the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, shortly after being declared winner of the Osun governorship election, Adeleke noted that he no longer wishes to pursue the matter against the anti‑graft agency. According to him, President Tinubu personally reached out, and that intervention was sufficient to resolve the dispute.
“What else do I want? I’ve instructed my Attorney‑General to drop it. Mr President has done well; he called me. What more do I want?” Adeleke said.
The EFCC had earlier placed a Post‑No‑Debit restriction on a state government account while investigating alleged mismanagement of about ₦11 billion in Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and FAAC allocations. The Commission justified the restriction on grounds of “precipitate and unwarranted movement of funds” into corporate entities.
Governor Adeleke initially rejected the EFCC’s action, directing the Attorney‑General and Commissioner for Justice to challenge it in court, describing the restriction as unlawful and politically motivated.
On allegations that some of his supporters remain in EFCC custody, Adeleke confirmed that his legal team is engaging with the Commission. He also questioned the rationale behind summoning his aides, including his spokesperson, noting that they had complied with the invitations because they had nothing to hide.
Addressing political speculation, Adeleke clarified that he is not considering a return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite his renewed support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He stressed that his support for the President is distinct from his party affiliation, having previously contested elections under the APC before joining the Peoples Democratic Party and later the Accord Party.
The governor further alleged that some individuals had been invoking President Tinubu’s name in connection with the EFCC matter without the President’s knowledge.
Governor Adeleke’s comments came after his victory in Saturday’s governorship election, where he secured a second term by polling 511,067 votes against APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji’s 444,815, according to results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
