NESREA Investigates Suspected Chemical Spill on Kaduna–Abuja Expressway
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has commenced investigations into a suspected chemical spill along the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway, following the appearance of a white, foamy substance at the scene of a truck accident.
In a statement issued by its Assistant Director (Press), Nwamaka Ejiofor, the agency confirmed that a team from its Kaduna State Field Office, led by State Coordinator Hena Dangari Emmanuel, visited the affected site. The team engaged with the Police Commander for Jere, ACP Sani Zubairu, the FRSC commander, and local community leaders.
According to NESREA, preliminary findings indicated that “a heavy-duty truck was involved in an accident leading to the spillage of its contents at the location.”
The agency said it had gathered information from relevant officials and residents to support the investigation.
It added that “samples of the foamy substance, soil, and water from a nearby stream have also been collected for laboratory analysis.”
NESREA strongly cautioned residents against contact with the foamy substance, nearby soil, or water sources until investigations are concluded. The agency stressed that this measure is necessary to prevent possible exposure to hazardous materials.
“Members of the public are strongly advised to avoid contact with the foamy substance, the water, and the surrounding soil until the investigation is concluded, to prevent possible exposure to hazardous materials,” the statement said.
The agency said laboratory analysis of the collected samples would determine the nature of the substance and guide further action.
