Mozambique’s Gas Bonanza: ENH and AEC Host Investor Briefing Amidst Major LNG Advancements
Mozambique is poised at a critical juncture in its energy sector evolution, with substantial liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects nearing commissioning and a surge of investor interest in one of the world’s most promising natural gas markets. The nation, home to significant gas discoveries over the past decade, is targeting an ambitious LNG production capacity of up to 40 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) through integrated offshore and onshore developments spearheaded by industry giants TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and Eni. This expanding project pipeline presents a wealth of new investment and participation opportunities across the entire oil and gas value chain.
In this dynamic environment, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) and Mozambique’s national energy company, Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH), are set to convene a Mozambique Showcase on Wednesday, July 22, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Maputo. This strategic investor briefing, hosted by NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, and Rudêncio Morais, CEO of ENH, will facilitate direct engagement on the latest industry developments, project milestones, and investment prospects shaping Mozambique’s energy landscape. The event combines networking with a comprehensive presentation of the country’s hydrocarbon sector, offering a forward-looking perspective on its oil and gas future.
This initiative arrives at a pivotal moment for Mozambique. With over 100 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves identified in the Rovuma Basin alone, the country is rapidly solidifying its position as a major global gas supplier. Several key LNG projects are progressing: Eni’s Coral North FLNG vessel is slated for commissioning in 2028, following its Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2025. This, combined with the Coral Sul project which commenced exports in 2022, will yield 7 mtpa, with Eni also tendering for a third Rovuma Basin platform. TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project in Area 1 of the Rovuma Basin aims for an initial production of 13.12 mtpa in its first phase, with first gas anticipated in 2029. As of May 2026, this project was 40% complete and employed 4,000 workers. ExxonMobil’s Rovuma LNG project, a $30 billion undertaking with an 18 mtpa capacity, is awaiting FID in 2026 or 2027, further bolstering the nation’s export capabilities.
Beyond these flagship projects, Mozambique’s energy potential is attracting broader international attention. The Spanish group Pamesa has indicated interest in the country’s LNG sector. Furthermore, a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tanzania aims to enhance oil and gas cooperation, while India has underscored the strategic importance of Mozambican gas resources for its energy imports and security.
ENH is prioritising the energy sector as a cornerstone of Mozambique’s economic development, focusing on enhanced project coordination, local content development, and state participation to ensure tangible benefits for local businesses and stakeholders. The upcoming Mozambique Showcase is designed to highlight these priorities and foster greater collaboration between energy companies and the state.

The AEC and ENH aim to leverage this event to foster collaboration, facilitate new partnerships, and ensure that the growing international interest translates into concrete investments and project development. “The sector must engage directly with ENH, identify opportunities, and forge the necessary partnerships to drive projects forward,” added Mr. Ayuk. “Mozambique has all the ingredients to become a global gas powerhouse, but realizing this ambition will require capital, technology, strong local participation, and an unwavering focus on execution.”
