Enugu State has been strategically chosen as the South-East Zonal Headquarters for the Office of the Tax Ombud. This significant development is poised to bolster taxpayer support services and fortify tax administration across the entire South-East geopolitical zone. The announcement was made by Dr. John Nwabueze, the Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Tax Ombud, during a recent visit to Governor Peter Mbah at the Enugu State Government House.
Dr. Nwabueze highlighted Enugu’s pivotal role as a leading industrial and commercial centre in Nigeria as the primary driver for this decision. The state’s burgeoning economic activities render it a critical nexus for the Office’s operational reach. The establishment of this zonal headquarters is anticipated to bring taxpayer support services closer to individuals and businesses within the region, thereby improving access to dispute resolution mechanisms and contributing to an uplift in the nation’s tax-to-GDP ratio.
In dynamic business environments, tax-related disputes, including those concerning multiple taxation, are a common occurrence. The Tax Ombud’s role is therefore essential in fostering fairness and confidence within the tax system. As Dr. Nwabueze articulated, “The payment of taxes remains an inalienable civic responsibility, but taxpayers also deserve to be treated fairly, respectfully and in accordance with the law.”
The Office of the Tax Ombud was established to facilitate timely, transparent, impartial, and amicable resolution of disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities. Efficient dispute resolution mechanisms are crucial for encouraging voluntary tax compliance, mitigating tensions between taxpayers and tax administrators, and cultivating greater public trust in the nation’s tax framework. This initiative is recognised as a landmark achievement within President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing tax reform agenda, which aims to construct a tax administration system that is fair, efficient, and citizen-focused.
Further enhancing accessibility, the Office has recently launched its official website, a toll-free call centre, and a digital case management portal. These platforms empower taxpayers to access vital information, lodge complaints without charge, and monitor the real-time progress of their cases. Dr. Nwabueze underscored the need for robust collaboration with the Enugu State Government to deepen taxpayer protection, promote voluntary compliance, and strengthen public confidence in tax administration.
The Office of the Tax Ombud operates as an independent and impartial institution, established under the Joint Tax Board (Establishment) Act, 2025. Its mandate encompasses the reception, review, and resolution of complaints pertaining to taxes, levies, regulatory fees, charges, customs duties, and excise matters.
Governor Peter Mbah welcomed the designation, affirming the Enugu State Government’s commitment to providing the necessary facilities for the regional headquarters’ successful operation. He described Enugu as an ideal location, aligning with his administration’s economic development agenda to expand the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within eight years through private sector-led investments. Governor Mbah noted that the establishment of the Tax Ombud Office arrives at a critical juncture as the state intensifies efforts to curb revenue leakages and broaden the tax net. He expressed confidence that the institution will enhance tax compliance, boost revenue generation, and support sustainable economic development. The Governor also lauded President Tinubu’s reform initiatives for their role in strengthening the nation’s tax system and increasing revenue vital for essential public services.
The designation of Enugu as the South-East headquarters of the Tax Ombud Office is expected to significantly improve taxpayer engagement, streamline dispute resolution processes, and contribute to the broader objective of cultivating a more transparent and efficient tax administration system across Nigeria.
