Edo APC Chairman Threatens Court Action Over Use of Old National Anthem
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, has issued a seven‑day ultimatum to security agencies, threatening to initiate legal proceedings against the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Senator Dino Melaye over the alleged use of Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise O Compatriots,” at political gatherings.
Speaking during a Zoom interview with TVC, Tenebe disclosed that he had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging immediate intervention. He warned that failure to act would compel him to seek judicial enforcement.
Tenebe expressed concern that the continued rendition of the old anthem at public events and protests could undermine national unity and trigger unrest. He clarified that while singing the anthem is not inherently criminal, its use in contexts capable of inciting division or disrupting public order could amount to a seditious offence.
He cited instances where the anthem was allegedly sung at a protest led by Dino Melaye against INEC and at an ADC meeting in Ibadan. Stressing Nigeria’s adherence to constitutional order, Tenebe insisted that actions capable of eroding national cohesion must be addressed under the law.
He further cautioned that individuals found culpable could face up to two years’ imprisonment, while political parties risk sanctions, including deregistration.
It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu, on May 29, 2024, signed into law the reinstatement of Nigeria’s original national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” replacing “Arise O Compatriots,” which had been in use since 1978.
