Council of Legal Education Warns Against Unaccredited Law Faculties, Releases Updated List of 117 Approved Universities
The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of universities approved to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria, warning prospective students and parents against enrolling in institutions that lack its accreditation. The Council stated that only universities duly approved by the regulatory body are authorized to offer law programmes whose graduates can proceed to the Nigerian Law School.
In a public notice signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, the Council emphasized that any university admitting students into a law programme without its approval is acting contrary to the regulations governing legal education in Nigeria. It further warned that graduates of unaccredited law faculties will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, regardless of the qualifications obtained from such institutions.
The updated list contains 117 universities across the country approved to offer the LL.B programme, including federal, state, and private institutions. The Council also highlighted that some universities are currently under admission moratoriums, including Baze University, Lead City University, and Nigeria Police Academy. The Council assured the public that the list would continue to be reviewed and updated in line with its statutory responsibility of regulating legal education and maintaining professional standards in Nigeria.
