UK Court Remands Nigerian Murder Suspect in Lewisham Case

A United Kingdom court has ordered the remand of Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, in custody over the alleged murder of Taiwo Ekerin, a 41‑year‑old Nigerian, following an assault in Lewisham, London.

According to the Metropolitan Police, officers responded to reports of an altercation on Lewisham High Street at about 4:40 a.m. on May 24.

Ekerin was found with severe head injuries, treated on site, and taken to hospital. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 30.

Oguanaya, of Eastfield Road, Enfield, was arrested on June 4, charged with murder on June 5, and appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court the same day. He was remanded in custody pending further proceedings scheduled for June 9.

A second suspect, aged 34, was also arrested on June 5 on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

The police have yet to reveal the circumstances surrounding the altercation that resulted in Ekerin’s death.

Also, reported on Friday that a 28-year-old Congolese man, Benjamin Katabana, was found guilty of murdering a UK-based Nigerian student, Uchenna Okirie, following a fatal stabbing at a shared accommodation in Norwich, England.

Katabana was found guilty by a jury at Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday after an 11-day trial.”
