Tobenna Erojikwe Attends Surulere Lawyers’ Forum General Meeting; Shares Insights into How Lawyers Can Boost Earning Capacity; Renews Call for Equitable Compensation in Legal Profession

Yesterday at the Surulere Lawyers’ Forum Monthly General Meeting, Tobenna Erojikwe rekindled his fervent crusade for equitable compensation within the legal profession. The theme of his electrifying session was “The Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order: Increasing the earning capacity of lawyers and other matters arising.”

Erojikwe, a tireless advocate for fair compensation in the legal profession in Nigeria, played a pivotal role in championing the Remuneration Committee Report and the subsequent endorsement of the White Paper by the NBA-NEC, which forms the foundation of the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, 2023.

During his knowledge-sharing session, Erojikwe underscored the pressing need for a just and fair remuneration system for legal practitioners in Nigeria. He stressed, “The legal profession is the bedrock of our society, and it is paramount that lawyers are adequately rewarded for their services. However, prevailing economic conditions mandate a frequent review and strict enforcement of the minimum fees outlined in the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, 2023.”

Expanding on his stance, Tobenna Erojikwe added, “Equitable compensation for legal professionals is vital to upholding the integrity and quality of our legal services. While the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, 2023, marked a step in the right direction, it’s crucial that we always revisit and adjust the minimum fees to align with current economic realities while devising means to ensure strict enforcement.”

Erojikwe also delved into the challenges faced by Nigerian lawyers due to economic disparities and the rising cost of living. He noted that these factors have made it increasingly arduous for young lawyers to sustain their careers while upholding their commitment to the profession. “We must strike a balance between providing affordable legal services to the public and ensuring lawyers can earn a decent livelihood,” he emphasised.

Responding to questions from the engaged audience, Erojikwe offered strategies and tactics for lawyers to bolster their earning potential. He encouraged lawyers to diversify their practice areas, explore alternative fee structures, and embrace technology to enhance efficiency and streamline their services.
