The Federal Government of Somalia has formally contracted for the crucial study and design phase of the Galkaayo–Elguula road, a 100-kilometre segment vital for enhancing national infrastructure and fostering economic development. The Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing hosted a signing ceremony for this pivotal agreement, underscoring the government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure investment.
The ceremony, presided over by the Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing, Mr. Ayuub Ismaaciil Yuusuf, saw the participation of key stakeholders including the Minister of Defense, Mr. Axmed Macallin Fiqi, and the Minister of Public Works for Galmudug State, Mr. Axmed Dhiblaawe Kaasir. Representatives from IBS Bank, GOB Community Organisation, and the contracted firm, KKATT Consult Limited, were also in attendance.
This initiative is a significant step towards the realisation of the broader Galkaayo–Hobyo road project, a 260-kilometre artery recognised as a cornerstone of central Somalia’s infrastructure. The Galkaayo–Hobyo corridor is strategically positioned to link inland regions with the Indian Ocean ports, thereby playing a critical role in stimulating trade, facilitating the seamless movement of goods and people, bolstering security, and promoting the country’s economic integration.
Minister Ayuub Ismaaciil Yuusuf highlighted the project’s paramount importance for the nation’s economic infrastructure development. He reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to expediting infrastructure investments and strengthening collaborative efforts with the Galmudug State Government and its development partners. Echoing this sentiment, Minister Axmed Macallin Fiqi emphasised the road’s essential contribution to national development, connectivity, and stability.
KKATT Consult Limited has been mandated to undertake comprehensive technical studies, preliminary and detailed design work, environmental and social impact assessments, and the preparation of bidding documents for the Galkaayo–Elguula section. This project forms an integral part of the Road Infrastructure Development Program of Somalia (RIPSOM), a significant initiative supported by funding from the African Development Bank and the European Union, and executed under the purview of the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing. The successful completion of this study and design phase is anticipated to pave the way for subsequent construction phases, offering substantial opportunities for legal, financial, and construction sector professionals involved in large-scale infrastructure development.
