Reliance Industries Charts Ambitious Course for 120 GWh Battery Manufacturing Dominance - Global

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is poised to become a global leader in battery energy storage system (BESS) and cell manufacturing, with plans to scale its annual capacity to an impressive 120 GWh. The initial phase of its 40 GWh annual BESS and cell gigafactory is on schedule for commissioning this year, with all necessary equipment already delivered to the Jamnagar site.

This strategic expansion was detailed by Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani during the company’s 49th Annual General Meeting. Ambani confirmed Reliance’s commitment to achieving the 120 GWh annual capacity target, projecting that the fully commissioned facility will position RIL as one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

Under its burgeoning New Energy business, RIL is meticulously developing a comprehensive clean energy ecosystem at the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Gujarat. This expansive 5,000-acre complex is designed as a premier integrated clean energy manufacturing hub, encompassing gigafactories for the entire solar value chain, fuel cell systems, green hydrogen production equipment, energy storage systems, battery cells, and power electronics.

The complex is transitioning from its construction phase to commissioning in the fiscal year 2026. RIL has already commissioned and operationalised its solar photovoltaic (PV) cell and module manufacturing lines. The company has produced nearly 1 GW of heterojunction technology (HJT) modules, which offer approximately 2% higher energy yield, 15% improved temperature performance, and 25% lower degradation compared to conventional modules.

Further underscoring its technological advancement, Reliance has secured Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) certification for its HJT technology. This achievement marks RIL as the first company in India to obtain ALMM listing for this advanced cell type. The certified cell manufacturing capacity includes 210 mm × 105 mm cell formats featuring zero-busbar designs, with cells rated at efficiencies up to 25.6% and power outputs ranging from 5.28 W to 5.66 W.

Ambani articulated the broader vision, stating, “We are building towards 20 GW per annum of fully integrated capacity – from polysilicon to ingots, wafers, cells, modules, and glass. Every step in this chain is a step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India].” This strategic alignment across upstream and downstream industries reinforces RIL’s objective of establishing a fully integrated, end-to-end renewable energy ecosystem.

In parallel, the Group is developing a significant renewable energy hub spanning 5,50,000 acres in the Kutch region. This initiative aims to deliver round-the-clock power at gigawatt scale by integrating solar and battery storage systems. Ambani projected, “This platform will become one of the lowest-cost sources of round-the-clock green power anywhere in the world. Once fully operationalised, the integrated hub will generate over 40 billion units of green electricity every year, which is approximately 3% of India’s annual electricity requirement.” The peak installation rate target for this RE hub is set at 55 MWp of solar modules and 150 MWh of battery containers daily. Complementing these developments, a dedicated Kutch-to-Jamnagar transmission corridor is under construction, with EPC contracts already awarded.

This aggressive expansion and integration strategy by Reliance Industries presents significant implications for legal counsel, compliance officers, investors, and corporate executives involved in the energy sector, particularly concerning supply chain security, regulatory compliance, and market positioning in the rapidly evolving clean energy landscape.
