Puntland and US Forge Enhanced Security Pact to Bolster Red Sea Maritime Defence and Counter-Terrorism
The Puntland State Government and the United States Government have formalised a significant security cooperation agreement, aimed at bolstering joint efforts against terrorism and safeguarding the critical maritime security of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The pact, signed in Boosaaso, signals an intensified commitment to regional stability and counter-terrorism operations.
The agreement was finalised following a high-level meeting between Puntland’s President, Said Abdullahi Deni, and a delegation from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). Major General Claude K. Tudor Jr., Commander of AFRICOM Special Operations, led the US contingent, which included ministers, military officials, and advisors. Discussions centred on deepening the existing security partnership, with a particular emphasis on combating terrorist threats and ensuring the unimpeded flow of commerce and security through these vital international waterways.
A key provision of the newly signed accord grants the United States Government expanded access to its base in Boosaaso. This expansion is intended to enhance the operational capacity for counter-terrorism initiatives and strengthen maritime security surveillance and response capabilities in the region. The strategic location of Puntland along the Horn of Africa makes such cooperation crucial for both regional and global security interests.
