The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) have cemented a robust partnership aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in the collection of oil and gas revenues. This strategic alignment follows a pivotal high-level meeting between NUPRC’s Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, and NRS Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, at the NRS headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
In a report by Champion Newspapers on June 17, 2026, Mrs. Eyesan lauded Dr. Adedeji’s leadership in driving reforms that culminated in the passage of the NRS Act. She affirmed that the transition of revenue collection duties has been executed seamlessly and efficiently, underscoring NUPRC’s unwavering commitment to fostering a conducive operating environment for stakeholders in the oil and gas sector. “We are here to enable them, enable their businesses, ensure that they survive, they succeed. And we want to grow the pie because when you grow the pie, everybody benefits,” Mrs. Eyesan stated, highlighting a shared objective of expanding the sector’s economic contribution.
Further elaborating on the sector’s performance, Mrs. Eyesan revealed that Nigeria possesses the capacity to produce up to 1.9 million barrels per day, having achieved a peak output of 1.86 million barrels per day in May. “We are back to production. We are ramping up now, and we want to continue working. We still recognise the constraints. Infrastructure and asset integrity are major constraints, but we will work on these. Even in the human capacity in the industry, we see that if we want to grow, we must also grow that capacity to meet the demands,” she added, signalling a proactive approach to addressing industry challenges. A key achievement disclosed was the successful digitisation of NUPRC’s operations, a priority since her assumption of office.
Responding to these developments, Dr. Adedeji commended NUPRC for its dynamism, professionalism, and commitment to transparency. He reiterated the NRS’s dedication to close collaboration with NUPRC, particularly concerning the revenue collection functions now under the purview of the new Act. “It is in the interest of Nigeria that we work together to grow revenue for the country in a transparent manner for the good of Nigerians. So, there is no way we would do something to jeopardise the progress or sustainability of another agency. I collect revenue. I don’t generate revenue. Wherever revenue is, I work on it and keep an account for you. So, I’m helping you to collect your royalties,” Dr. Adedeji explained, clarifying the symbiotic relationship between the two agencies. He assured NUPRC of continued support in their collective pursuit of fair, transparent, and sustainable revenue generation for the Nigerian government, a critical objective for investors, compliance officers, and corporate executives navigating the nation’s fiscal landscape.
