Nigeria’s Digital Standards Platform: A Catalyst for Quality, Compliance, and Competitiveness

Nigeria's Digital Standards Platform: A Catalyst for Quality, Compliance, and Competitiveness - Nigeria

The Nigerian Government has launched a pivotal Digital Standards Platform, a strategic initiative designed to bolster consumer confidence in locally manufactured products, streamline regulatory compliance for businesses, and elevate Nigeria’s global competitiveness through enhanced quality assurance. This development marks a significant stride towards President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification agenda and the acceleration of industrialisation.

Speaking at the unveiling in Abuja, the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, underscored the platform’s role in promoting digital governance. The collaborative effort between the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), and Nigeria Technology Company Goringu, exemplifies the government’s commitment to coordinated reform. “For government, whenever Agencies and Ministries collaborate, it’s an indication of progress that is being made,” Senator Enoh remarked, highlighting the synergy as a departure from over-reliance on singular government efforts.

The platform is poised to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s substantial domestic market by instilling greater trust in the quality of ‘Made-in-Nigeria’ goods. For manufacturers, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), it promises to transform standardisation from a bureaucratic obstacle into a tangible business advantage. “The Digital Standards Platform dismantles all such barriers. It places the full library of our national standards, compliance tools and certification services within the reach of everyone,” Senator Enoh stated. The Bureau of Public Procurement will integrate the platform into its processes, a move expected to significantly boost implementation given public procurement’s substantial role in the national economy.

This initiative is intrinsically linked to Nigeria’s industrial ambitions within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Senator Enoh cautioned that local industries must adhere to internationally accepted standards to remain competitive across Africa and globally, warning against Nigeria becoming a “dumping ground” for substandard goods.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, Director-General and Chief Executive of SON, described the platform as a transformative step towards a digitally enabled national quality infrastructure, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria First Policy. “From today, Nigeria’s Industrial Standards, compliance tools, conformity assessment services and standards-related resources are available digitally, searchable, accessible and verifiable, without the barriers of distance, queues or paperwork,” Dr. Okeke announced. The platform functions as a unified digital gateway, offering access to Nigerian Industrial Standards, certified products, verified manufacturers, and other standards-related resources via an integrated online marketplace and directory.

Furthermore, the platform enhances affordability for Nigerians seeking internationally recognised standards. Through SON’s licensing agreements with global standards bodies, users can acquire selected adopted international standards at up to 35 per cent below their original acquisition cost. This democratises access to critical quality benchmarks, empowering businesses and consumers alike.
