INEC: Nigeria’s Presidential Elections to Hold Feb 25, 2023

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday confirmed that Nigeria’s presidential elections for 2023 will hold on February 25, 2023. INEC also released the timetable for the 2023 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood addressed newsmen at a press conference held inside the Conference Room, INEC Headquarters in Abuja where the commission laid out the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 general elections.

The release of the election timetable follows the signing of the newly amended Electoral Act 2022 into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, February 25, 2022.

According to Mahmood, Nigeria’s presidential elections and elections to the National Assembly will hold on the same day “while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold two weeks later on Saturday 11th March 2023. With this adjustment, the 2023 General Election is now 363 days away.”

From the timetable released by INEC, campaigns for Nigeria’s presidential elections will commence on Wednesday 28th September 2022 and end on Thursday, February 23, 2023. Campaigns for Governorship and State Assembly elections are scheduled to kick off on Wednesday 12th October 2022 and end on Thursday 9th March 2023.

A number of leading political figures have expressed interest in contesting Nigeria’s presidential elections in 2023. Currently, interested aspirants include chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; lawyer and former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Kingsley Moghalu; and former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
