President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, Head of State of Gabon, today engaged in high-level discussions with Mr. Wamkele MENE, Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The meeting, held in Libreville, focused on accelerating Gabon’s integration into the vast African market and optimising its participation in continental trade initiatives.
The deliberations provided a critical platform to assess the ongoing implementation of the AfCFTA agreement within Gabon and to review the progress of the joint action plan established between the Gabonese government and the continental trade bloc. The overarching objective is to empower Gabon to fully capitalise on the economic opportunities presented by the AfCFTA.
Key areas of discussion included the imperative modernisation of Gabon’s customs systems and border infrastructure, essential for streamlining trade flows. Furthermore, the parties explored strategies for strengthening institutional capacities to support trade facilitation and for fostering greater private sector involvement in driving trade development across the continent.
The AfCFTA Secretary-General underscored Gabon’s considerable economic potential, specifically highlighting the robust production capabilities of the Nkok Special Economic Zone. He also recognised Gabon’s strategic geographical location as a significant advantage for its seamless integration into continental value chains.
President Nguema expressed satisfaction with the productive exchange, reaffirming Gabon’s commitment to its economic development agenda. This vision is anchored in the local transformation of raw materials, the diversification of the national economy, and the strategic enhancement of digital technologies, all in alignment with the National Growth and Development Plan (PNCD).
Gabon formally signed and ratified the AfCFTA agreement in 2019, thereby securing access to a continental market encompassing over 1.4 billion consumers. Through its participation in this landmark agreement, Gabon aims to bolster regional cooperation and champion fair and integrated trade practices across Africa, presenting significant opportunities and challenges for legal practitioners, compliance officers, and corporate strategists navigating this evolving landscape.
