The Federal Government has launched a significant nationwide initiative aimed at bolstering the formalisation of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by offering free Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) business name registration to 250,000 eligible entities. This strategic programme, a collaborative effort between the CAC and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), with the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeks to dismantle key barriers to business growth and enhance the operational landscape for Nigerian entrepreneurs.
This initiative directly addresses the pervasive challenge of informal business operations, which often impede MSMEs’ access to crucial financial resources, government support programmes, and expanded market opportunities. By facilitating free CAC registration, the government intends to integrate a substantial number of businesses into the formal economy, thereby unlocking their potential for sustainable development and increased competitiveness.
The programme’s design extends beyond mere registration. Beneficiaries will be integrated into SMEDAN’s comprehensive support ecosystem. This includes access to vital business training, capacity-building workshops, technical assistance, market linkage facilitation, and other government interventions designed to foster growth and resilience. This holistic approach underscores the government’s commitment to not only formalising businesses but also equipping them with the tools necessary for long-term success.
Entrepreneurs keen to leverage this opportunity must navigate the application process through the SMEDAN portal. Prospective applicants are required to register on the portal, complete their profiles, and explicitly indicate that they do not currently possess a CAC registration. Upon successful submission, eligible candidates will be contacted with further instructions. Notably, existing members of the SMEDAN database who are yet to secure CAC registration are automatically eligible and need not initiate a new application process.
This programme represents a substantial government investment in the MSME sector. The CAC is foregoing approximately ₦3 billion in registration fees, while SMEDAN commits to providing essential post-registration support. This dual commitment highlights the programme’s dual objective: reducing immediate financial burdens for businesses and ensuring their continued development and sustainability through ongoing support. The initiative is poised to significantly impact the ease of doing business in Nigeria, offering a clear pathway for MSMEs to formalise, access critical resources, and contribute more effectively to the national economy.
