CHLP CONFERENCE MAIDEN EDITION HELD IN LAGOS

Crasvenit Horizon Legal Practice (CHLP), a Corporate/ Commercial Law Firm based in Lagos, Nigeria holds the maiden edition of its annual conference.

The Conference themed ‘The Nigerian Business Terrain: Impact of Recent Laws and Regulations’ held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

Discussing this notable topic, the Partners of CHLP, Folarin Oloyede, Esq and Oheji Emmanuel Iji, Esq were joined by four other seasoned speakers: Dr. Akin-Olusoji Akinyele, the Group Managing Director at NewGlobe Nigeria (who was also the Keynote Speaker); Abiola Babatunde-Ojo, an Executive Director at Prudent Energy and Services Limited; Wale Ekundayo, the Vice President of Cerebre Digital Limited; and Sherisse Alexander, a Director at Watt Renewables.

The CHLP speech analysed two very important pieces of legislation – the Business Facilitation Act, 2022 (“BFA”) and the Fifth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, particularly how they may be applied for an improved economy. The BFA as a significant law has the potential to further simplify and streamline business procedures in the country with key provisions like one
establishing a one-stop-shop for business registration, licensing, and compliance, among many other innovative provisions. The speech also drew attention to the recent amendments in the Fifth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, such as, the transfer of “Railways” and “Electricity Generation” from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List, and the opportunities created for businesses at the Federal and State levels.

Speaking on the business value of the government, the keynote speaker, Dr. Akinyele, reiterated the importance of the Government as a success factor in any economic equation. He went further to give details of the government’s participation in the economy with roles like, licensing, providing enabling business legislations, issuing policy directions, and having the political will
to execute and see things through.

Amongst other critical analyses made, the Conference also spoke to the fact that all stakeholders in the economy must be willing to engage the legal and regulatory framework to achieve all potential benefits, and test the law to truly enjoy what it promises. The CHLP Conference stirred a conversation that finely intertwined perspectives from the private and public sectors, and from
legal practitioners that proffered practical solutions to issues on the front burner of the Nigerian business and legal landscapes. The Conference, spoke to the fact that the Nigerian business environment is unique, dynamic, and diverse; one that presents both opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs and investors, with immense potential for the prosperity of the over 200 million people in Nigeria.
