American Singer Chris Brown Sentenced to Eight-Month Suspended Term in UK Nightclub Assault Case
The Southwark Crown Court in London has sentenced American singer, Chris Brown, 37, to an eight-month prison term, suspended for 12 months, following his guilty plea to one count of affray.
The case arose from a February 2023 incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, where Brown struck music producer Abraham Diaw twice on the head with a glass tequila bottle, causing head and knee injuries. CCTV footage captured the attack, which also involved Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu.
Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month suspended sentence. Both defendants were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
Delivering judgment, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the assault as dangerous, stressing that striking someone on the head with a glass bottle could have resulted in far more serious harm. He further emphasised that commercial success does not entitle defendants to preferential treatment in court.
Brown was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 upon returning to the UK for a concert, more than two years after the incident. He initially faced charges of assault and attempted grievous bodily harm, but prosecutors dropped those counts after his guilty plea to affray.
The suspended sentence means Brown avoids immediate imprisonment but risks jail if he breaches the suspension terms within the 12-month period. The ruling concludes the criminal proceedings arising from the nightclub attack.
