AMEA Power's 120MW Solar Project Achieves Commercial Operation, Signalling REIPPPP Bid Window 6 Success and Investor Confidence - Africa

AMEA Power has achieved a significant milestone in South Africa’s renewable energy landscape, with its 120MW Solar PV Project becoming the first to reach Commercial Operation under Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). This development was formally recognised at the Africa Energy Forum (aef), where South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, delivered a keynote address underscoring the critical role of renewable energy investment in bolstering the nation’s energy security, driving industrial development, and fostering economic growth.

Minister Ramokgopa expressed gratitude for the investment, stating, “Thank you for placing your faith in our country. South Africa will not disappoint. Through your investments, you are contributing to economic growth, creating jobs, developing skills, and empowering our people – and that is a major contribution to our country.” He commended AMEA Power’s established track record of delivering projects within accelerated timelines, noting the company’s expanding presence in South Africa as a positive indicator for the country’s ongoing energy transition. “We are confident that, with partners such as AMEA Power, South Africa will achieve its energy and economic development ambitions,” the Minister added. The Minister also affirmed his support for AMEA Power’s continued engagement in future energy procurement rounds, citing the company’s proven efficiency and commitment to rapid project delivery.

The commemoration event, hosted by AMEA Power Chairman Mr Hussain Al Nowais, convened key stakeholders including government representatives, the Independent Power Producer Office (IPPO), Eskom Green, financiers, development partners, and broader industry players to deliberate on the efficacy of public-private partnerships in expediting infrastructure development. The successful commissioning of the 120MW Solar PV Project marks AMEA Power’s inaugural operational asset in South Africa, reinforcing sustained investor confidence in the nation’s renewable energy market.

Situated near Klerksdorp in the North West Province, the project is projected to generate approximately 325GWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power an estimated 97,000 households and augment South Africa’s national grid capacity. During its peak construction phase, the project generated employment for approximately 1,050 individuals in Klerksdorp and surrounding regions, while also contributing to the growth of local businesses. In addition to this solar project, AMEA Power has secured two further projects under Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) in South Africa, both located in the North West Province and each possessing a capacity exceeding 300MWh.

This initiative aligns with South Africa’s broader strategic objectives to diversify its energy mix, enhance energy security, and attract investment into vital infrastructure. The 120MW solar project exemplifies how international capital, in conjunction with local partnerships, can be effectively leveraged to achieve long-term economic and developmental outcomes as the nation progresses with its energy transition.

Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, remarked, “Through this project, we are deepening our commitment to South Africa and demonstrating our ability to deliver large-scale energy infrastructure that supports national priorities.” He further elaborated, “The South African market remains strategically important to AMEA Power’s African growth ambitions. We see significant opportunities to support the country’s energy transition while contributing to industrial development, skills development, job creation and broader economic participation.”

The USD120 million project was developed through a partnership between AMEA Power and Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Energy, both wholly African women-led energy companies. This collaboration underscores a mutual dedication to expanding participation within South Africa’s energy sector, promoting localisation, and advancing transformation objectives. The project’s financing structure included approximately USD100 million in debt from Standard Bank South Africa and USD8 million in equity funding from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), facilitating substantial involvement from local partners.

Beyond augmenting South Africa’s generation capacity, investments of this nature contribute to the resilience and stability of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), thereby strengthening the regional energy ecosystem. As Southern African nations pursue enhanced regional energy integration, renewable energy investments are poised to play an increasingly pivotal role in supporting economic expansion and long-term energy security across the continent. The successful commissioning of the 120MW solar project also serves as a testament to the REIPPPP’s effectiveness in attracting private sector investment, enabling infrastructure delivery, and fostering collaborative partnerships among government entities, financiers, local enterprises, and international developers.

AMEA Power’s strategic expansion across Africa includes a diversified renewable energy portfolio encompassing solar, wind, battery energy storage, and water infrastructure. South Africa remains a cornerstone market within this strategy, offering avenues to support national development priorities and contribute to the continent’s broader sustainable energy infrastructure growth. Among the distinguished attendees at the event were representatives from the Department of Electricity and Energy, the Independent Power Producer Office (IPPO), Eskom Green, and other key stakeholders instrumental in advancing South Africa’s energy transition. This achievement represents a crucial advancement for both AMEA Power and South Africa’s renewable energy sector, illustrating the synergistic potential of international investment, local partnerships, and supportive policy frameworks in accelerating the deployment of energy infrastructure critical for economic growth, energy security, and regional development.
