NBA Electoral Committee Dismisses Fake Suspension Notice, Confirms 2026 Elections Will Hold July 18

The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has urged members of the Bar to disregard a document purportedly suspending the 2026 NBA National Elections, describing it as unauthenticated and lacking any indication that it originated from the Office of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the Committee stated that the document appears to be an unofficial publication and should not be relied upon by members.

ECNBA reaffirmed that it is an independent body established under the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025), with the constitutional mandate to organize and conduct elections into the Association’s national offices.

The Committee emphasized that, once constituted by the National Executive Council (NEC), it possesses full authority to superintend and manage the electoral process in accordance with the Constitution.

The Committee categorically stated that the 2026 NBA National Elections will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, 18 July 2026, stressing that there is no legal impediment to the conduct of the elections.

It further disclosed that relevant institutions and election observers, including INEC, the DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), ICAN, and other accredited monitoring groups, are expected to observe the electoral process to ensure its integrity, transparency, and credibility.

ECNBA also confirmed that the Candidates’ Debate and Manifesto Day will hold on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, as earlier announced, urging all candidates and stakeholders to participate either physically or virtually.

The Committee encouraged members to continue scrutinizing the recently published Branch-by-Branch Voters List, dismissing allegations that the register is padded or fictitious.

It maintained that the publication was made to promote transparency and allow stakeholders the opportunity to identify and report genuine observations before the register is finalized.

Reiterating its commitment to a free, fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process, the Committee advised all candidates and members to rely only on official communications and continue to follow the Revised Timetable issued by ECNBA.
