Federal High Court Sentences Woman to 20 Years for Illegal Arms Courier to Bandit Networks

Justice Hauwa Yilwa of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has sentenced Halima Haliru Umar to 20 years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition and attempting to support acts of terrorism.

Halima was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2025 at Jos North LGA, Plateau State, with 302 rounds of AK‑47 live ammunition. She was arraigned on March 11 on a four‑count charge and pleaded guilty to counts three and four.

In her judgment, Justice Yilwa noted that the guilty plea amounted to an admission of the prosecution’s facts. Defence counsel Hamza Dantani urged leniency, citing that the convict is a first‑time offender, remorseful, and a nursing mother. The prosecution, represented by Caliistus Eze, confirmed there was no prior conviction record.

Justice Yilwa sentenced Halima to 20 years on count three and one year on count four, with trial on counts one and two adjourned to July 9.
