The Senate has confirmed Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation took place on Tuesday following the presentation of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
In his submission, Senator Adegbonmire formally moved that the Senate consider and adopt the Committee’s report on the nomination of Justice Oyewole.
This confirmation follows a request by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had earlier transmitted a letter to the Senate pursuant to Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), seeking legislative approval for Justice Oyewole’s elevation to the apex court.
The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, read the President’s communication, which urged the Senate to confirm the appointment expeditiously. The matter was thereafter referred to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for scrutiny, culminating in Tuesday’s confirmation.
