Woman Sues Moniepoint Over Alleged Unauthorized Bank Accounts

A woman, Abiodun Olokunjuwon has filed a suit against Moniepoint Microfinance Bank Ltd before the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan Judicial Division, alleging that the bank unlawfully created and operated accounts in her name without her consent.

The action, marked M1W/014/2026 and instituted on February 11, 2026, seeks ₦50 million in damages. The claimant contends that Moniepoint opened two accounts using her National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) without authorization, in breach of her constitutional right to privacy and statutory data protection safeguards.

Olokunjuwon argues that the accounts were created without proper verification, leading to restrictions on her legitimate accounts after third parties allegedly conducted transactions through the unauthorized accounts. She maintains that the bank’s conduct amounts to a violation of Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution, as well as provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 and the NDPA General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID) 2025.

Her reliefs include:

– A declaration that Moniepoint’s actions constitute unlawful processing of her personal data.

– An order directing the bank to permanently close the unauthorized accounts and delete all personal data linked to them.
