A South African court has ordered the remand of four officers of the National Traffic Police accused of killing a Nigerian motorist, Mr. Osinakachukwu Onu.
According to reports from Independent Online (IOL), relayed by PUNCH Metro, the suspects were denied bail by the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court.
The officers were identified as: Inspector Rudolph Foromo (29), Inspector Smanga Dladla (31), Inspector Colani Senzo Dlamini (34) and Inspector Vusumuzi Justice Simelane (36)
Mr. Onu, a 37‑year‑old Nigerian who was reportedly resident in South Africa legally, was allegedly pursued by the four traffic officers during an operation. Details of the shooting remain under investigation, but it is believed the officers were on official duty at the time.
Following the incident, the suspects fled the scene but were later traced and arrested by detectives. Their official firearms have since been seized for forensic ballistic analysis.
The officers are facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. Police investigations revealed that upon arrival at the scene, the traffic officers had already departed. Detectives subsequently tracked them to a location in Klerksdorp, leading to their arrest.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Ryno Naidoo, commended the swift action of the detectives and acknowledged the role of members of the public who provided information that facilitated the arrests. He urged continued cooperation between communities and law enforcement in combating crime.
This case adds to the troubling record of Nigerians killed in South Africa. In July, PUNCH Metro reported the killing of two Nigerians, identified as Austin and Ayo, who were shot dead in Durban by masked gunmen.
