The Ghanaian Economic and Organised Crime Office announced that, in cooperation with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice, it has seized a luxury vehicle—a 2019 Lamborghini Urus—from dancehall artiste Charles Armah, popularly known as Shatta Wale.
In a press statement released Tuesday by acting Executive Director Raymond Archer and shared on X by Joy News, EOCO detailed that the operation stemmed from a 2023 request by the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.
Acting on that request, EOCO’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit conducted a lawful search of Shatta Wale’s residence in the Trassaco Valley Phase 1 enclave of Accra.
The search uncovered the Lamborghini Urus, which U.S. authorities have traced to the proceeds of one Nana Kwabena Amuah, currently serving an 86-month sentence in the United States for multiple financial crimes.
According to the statement, although the vehicle was located in Armah’s possession, he was permitted to voluntarily hand it over to EOCO operatives to avoid public spectacle.
EOCO described the seizure as professional and incident-free, noting that Armah was concerned that a high-profile confiscation would damage his brand image if supporters witnessed the car being driven away.
The agency also explained that officers of its Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit were armed during the operation, emphasizing that carrying weapons is standard safety protocol for such high-risk enforcement actions.
Further legal steps are being coordinated with U.S. authorities, who plan to issue a formal Mutual Legal Assistance request to repatriate the Lamborghini as part of the $4,743,443 restitution owed by Amuah.
EOCO confirmed that both Shatta Wale and a former senior National Signal Bureau official have been designated persons of interest and will be invited to assist in the continuing investigation in the coming days.
In the wake of the seizure, Shatta Wale took to Facebook to criticize EOCO’s tactics, accusing Executive Director Raymond Archer of overreach and warning that armed raids on private homes risk undermining public trust in the agency.
