The federal government has officially declared December 25, 26 and January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, said the announcement was intended to allow Nigerians nationwide to observe the festive period.
Tunji-Ojo said, “We urge Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ.
He further encouraged citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity, to use the holidays to pray for peace, security and national progress. The minister also advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the festive period, while wishing them a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
