The Federal High Court has convicted two men for producing and selling fake alcoholic beverages in Lagos State, sentencing them to a combined total of 40 years’ imprisonment.
The convicts, Otuorimuno Nelson Aziakpono, and Ikegwuonu Davidson Ikechukwu, were found guilty by Justice Allagoa Ambrose of offences related to the production, possession, sale, and distribution of adulterated and unregistered alcoholic drinks within Lagos State.
Sayo Akintola, the Resident Media Consultant of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), said in a statement that the conviction followed an enforcement operation carried out on December 3, 2025, at Kojo Street, Ijanikin, and Vespa Market, where the illegal activities were uncovered.
During the operation, authorities discovered large quantities of counterfeit and unregistered alcoholic beverages, including counterfeit versions of Hennessy VSOP, Hennessy Very Special, Jameson Irish Whiskey, William Lawson Blended Scotch Whisky, and Gordon’s Dry Gin.
The statement said the duo were charged on eight counts, including possession of unwholesome products, manufacture of counterfeit beverages, and distribution of fake drinks.
“The defendants were charged on eight counts bordering on possession of unwholesome products, manufacture and distribution of counterfeit beverages, and related offences under applicable laws,” the statement read.
The case was prosecuted by NAFDAC, which reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that unsafe products do not enter the market.
NAFDAC warned that adulterated alcoholic beverages pose serious health risks to consumers and stressed that the agency would continue to intensify enforcement actions nationwide to clamp down on such illegal activities.
The agency also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products to the nearest agency office, reiterating that adulterated alcoholic drinks pose serious health risks.
