Abubakar Malami, SAN, former Attorney‑General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.
Announcing his ambition on Monday, November 17, during an interview with DCL Hausa, Malami pledged to prioritise security and revitalise the state’s agricultural economy, which he described as being in decline due to policy failures and insecurity.
Malami expressed confidence in his political base across Kebbi, stating: “INEC guidelines don’t permit mobilisation yet, but when the time comes, you will see that the people of Kebbi are with us. I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win. We won’t disappoint those who believe in us.”
The former AGF criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party of worsening socio‑economic conditions in the North and leaving farmers vulnerable to banditry. He lamented that persistent attacks had displaced farmers and crippled food production, noting that rice mills which operated for decades had shut down due to “bad policies favouring foreign companies.”
According to Malami, his governorship bid is driven by a desire to “salvage Kebbi State”, restore security, rebuild agriculture, and defend the welfare of residents. He insisted that his campaign is “not for personal gain but a rescue mission.”
Malami had earlier resigned from the APC in July 2025 and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), explaining that the decision followed “wide consultations and deep personal reflection.” He emphasised that his defection was motivated by love for the nation and concern for the daily hardship faced by citizens, rather than anger or personal ambition.
