EFCC, ICPC Chiefs Urge Speedier Adjudication of Corruption Cases, Commend NJC’s Efforts

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, and the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Barrister Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, have commended the National Judicial Council (NJC) for its initiatives aimed at expediting the adjudication of corruption and financial crimes cases in Nigeria.

The commendations were separately delivered in Abuja on March 3 and 4, 2026, during the 9th meeting of the Corruption and Financial Crimes Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO).

While acknowledging progress in the prosecution of high‑profile corruption cases, both anti‑graft chiefs expressed concern over persistent delays in trials.

EFCC Chairman Olukoyede criticised what he termed the liberal exercise of judicial discretion in sensitive matters, noting that frivolous applications often prolong proceedings. He called for clear benchmarks for judicial conduct and consequences for actions that frustrate justice.

ICPC Chairman Aliyu advocated for the introduction of a Practice Direction prescribing timelines for corruption trials, similar to election petition proceedings. He cited Kenya and Zambia as examples of jurisdictions that have adopted time‑bound trial frameworks.

In his remarks, Justice Suleiman Galadima (Rtd.), Chairman of COTRIMCO, highlighted the positive outcomes of collaboration between the NJC and anti‑corruption agencies. He referenced the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun’s earlier remarks on judicial reforms, noting that the EFCC secured 1,417 convictions in the first half of 2025, while the ICPC initiated 43 new cases and secured nine convictions within the same period.

Justice Galadima explained that the ICPC’s reduced case numbers reflect a strategic shift towards preventive and proactive measures to curb corruption before escalation. He reaffirmed the NJC’s commitment to strengthening institutional cooperation in the anti‑corruption drive.

Stakeholders at the meeting reiterated their resolve to enhance efficiency, accountability, and integrity in the handling of corruption and financial crimes cases nationwide.
