The Federal Government has tendered a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, as evidence in the ongoing terrorism trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Gulak was allegedly killed by members of IPOB in 2021 for reportedly violating the group’s sit-at-home order in Imo State.
The document was presented by the second prosecution witness, identified as BBB, during Tuesday’s proceedings at the Federal High Court, Abuja. The witness was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).
BBB had earlier testified that Kanu, during a radio broadcast, called for a sit-at-home protest, which he claimed eventually led to Gulak’s killing. He also told the court that he was involved in the investigations surrounding the incident and brought with him the CTC of Gulak’s death certificate, dated July 18, 2021, issued by the police.
Justice Omotosho admitted the document in evidence and marked it as Exhibit PWJ.
Meanwhile, Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), has refuted claims that he and other members of the defence team were denied access to their client on Tuesday by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
This followed a social media post by one of the lawyers, Alloy Ejimakor, alleging that DSS operatives barred Kanu’s legal team from seeing him.
When asked by Justice Omotosho to clarify the situation, Agabi commended the DSS for their conduct, stating that he was treated with courtesy.
“I was not denied access to the defendant. I had planned to visit with my colleagues—Ikpeazu, Etiaba, and Erokoro—but they couldn’t make it. When I arrived at the DSS facility around 1 p.m., I was told our names had not been received. To be fair, the officials treated me respectfully. I told them I would return another day,” Agabi said.
