South Africa’s Adventure Tourism Boom Delivers R25 Billion Boost to the Economy
South Africa’s adventure tourism sector is rapidly evolving from a niche travel trend into a powerful driver of economic growth and job creation. Recent industry research shows that in 2024 adventure tourism contributed roughly R25 billion (about $1.37 billion) to the national economy, with direct revenues of around R12 billion. When broader economic effects are included — such as spending on transport, accommodation, food and local services — the total impact climbs significantly, helping stimulate growth across multiple regions of the country.
One of the most notable benefits of this boom is employment creation. The sector now supports an estimated 91,000 jobs nationwide, providing opportunities for guides, hospitality staff, transport operators and other service providers. These roles are especially important in rural and previously under-served areas, where adventure travel has helped diversify local economies beyond traditional tourism hotspots like Cape Town and Kruger National Park.
Adventure tourism includes a wide range of experiences that draw both international visitors and domestic travellers — from hiking and mountain biking in the Drakensberg to shark-cage diving off the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and kayaking along scenic rivers and coastal routes. These activities not only attract tourists but also encourage them to stay longer and spend more, further amplifying economic impact. Industry cooperation is helping to sustain this momentum. The Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) recently formalised a strategic partnership with the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), linking local operators to global markets and strengthening professional standards in the sector.
With the global adventure tourism market projected to grow to nearly $1.7 trillion by 2032, South Africa is well-positioned to capture a larger share of this expanding travel segment, spreading economic benefits more broadly and supporting sustainable development across the country.
