Kenya Races to Meet EU Traceability Deadline for Coffee Exports

Kenya has confirmed that it will meet the European Union’s new traceability requirements for agricultural exports, with coffee at the center of the push. The rules, which take effect on 30 December 2025, require exporters to provide full traceability of commodities such as coffee, cocoa, and palm oil to ensure they are not linked to deforestation.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi said the government is working with county authorities and cooperatives to roll out digital tracking systems. Each consignment of coffee will be traceable back to its farm of origin. The system will capture production, processing, and transport data, making it possible to verify compliance with the EU regulation.

The EU is Kenya’s largest buyer of coffee, accounting for more than 60 percent of exports. Without compliance, shipments could be blocked at entry points, exposing farmers and exporters to heavy losses. Linturi said the government has no intention of letting that happen.

The Coffee Directorate has been tasked with coordinating farmers’ training and upgrading cooperative systems to align with the new rules. Officials are also exploring integration with blockchain-based solutions to strengthen oversight.

Stakeholders say the deadline is tight, but the reforms could modernize the sector. Digital traceability is expected to reduce side-selling, strengthen quality assurance, and build trust with international buyers. For smallholder farmers, the challenge will be access to training and technology, but officials say subsidies and cooperative support are being mobilized.

Kenya’s assurance comes at a time when other African producers are struggling to meet the EU’s deadline. If successful, Kenya could secure a stronger foothold in Europe’s premium coffee market and reinforce its reputation for high-quality beans.
