South Africa Launches G20 Task Force to Tackle Global Wealth

In a bold and historic move, President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday launched a G20 “Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Wealth Inequality”, the first of its kind in the forum’s history. Tasked to deliver a comprehensive report ahead of the Johannesburg G20 summit, this initiative signals South Africa’s commitment to placing inequality at the center of global economic discourse.

The committee will be chaired by Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz, accompanied by a distinguished panel including Winnie Byanyima (UNAIDS), Jayati Ghosh (Economist), Dr Adriana Abdenur (Brazil), Professor Imraan Valodia (South Africa), and Dr Wanga Zembe-Mkabile (South Africa). Their mandate: to analyze the structures that have facilitated the surge in wealth concentration; highlighting that the world’s richest 1% have amassed over US$33.9 trillion since 2015, a sum sufficient to eliminate global poverty 22 times over.

President Ramaphosa emphasized that inequality poses a systemic risk to economic stability, social cohesion, and democratic integrity. He highlighted how vaccine apartheid and rising debt burdens have deepened global divides, calling the emergence of an economic oligarchy a pressing threat.

Stiglitz echoed this urgency, stating that inequality is a policy choice and calling on G20 nations to adopt transformative economic and social strategies. His charge: turn the public’s frustration into “sound, transformative policy proposals.”
