CAN Appeals Conviction Of Christian Woman Jailed Over Religious Conversion

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has voiced concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of Lami Samuel Dawa by Justice A.B. Kumdila of the Borno State High Court, arising from her alleged involvement in the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity.

In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN noted that an appeal has already been filed and stressed its commitment to allowing the judicial process to take its full course.

He said, “Nevertheless, the case raises important questions about the protection of religious freedom and the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The association believes that every individual has the right to freely choose, change or practise their religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.

“CAN therefore calls on the relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties are protected and that justice is served in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
