Delta Education Commissioner Detained as Police Probe Death of Deputy Director Unity Adeda
As controversy continues to rage over the death of the Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, at his place of work last week, the State Police Command has announced that it had “taken into custody the Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.”
The education commissioner was taken into police custody together with three other suspects in connection with the case.
“This brings to five (5) the number of persons currently in police custody in connection with the investigation into the death of Mr Adeda,” the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Bright Edafe, a superintendent of police (SP) said in statement issued in Asaba.
He noted that, “The Command has consequently launched a manhunt for the two key suspects, Mrs Clemetine Ufuoma, Director of Basic and Secondary Education, and Clement Apia, driver to the Commissioner for Secondary Education, whose presence is required in furtherance of the investigation.”
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Mr Samuel E. Erale, hinted that the two suspects fingered might be declared wanted, advising them report to the police hastily.
“CP Erale advised the two suspects, wherever they may be, to make themselves available to the Police without further delay,” the command’s spokesman said.
Erale assured that the investigation into the death of Mr Adeda “will be pursued thoroughly, impartially and professionally,” adding that, “due process will be followed and anyone found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.”
The Delta State Government had, weekend, announced the setting up of an eight-member panel of inquiry into the death of Mr Adeda.
Reports stated that this has not gone down well with the family of the late deputy director as the relations considered “the Administrative Panel of Inquiry” rather hasty.
The position was reportedly canvassed by Mr Lloyd Sodje Adeda, brother of the deceased who described his brother’s death as “gruesome murder”.
The state branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by the Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, also came under sharp attack for hastily calling off the suspension of services by the state civil servants declared on Friday by the NLC leadership.
