NEPZA Cracks Down on Illegal Container Imports, Reinforces Free Trade Zone Integrity
The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has initiated a robust enforcement drive against illicit container imports and other regulatory breaches within Nigeria’s Free Trade Zones (FTZs). This move signals a heightened commitment to upholding the integrity of the FTZ system and fostering a transparent, fair trading environment for all stakeholders.
Olufemi Ogunyemi, NEPZA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, announced the intensified measures in Abuja, as detailed in a statement released by Martins Odeh, the Authority’s Head of Corporate Communications. Ogunyemi underscored that operating licenses granted to FTZ entities are legal instruments that impose specific obligations on all businesses operating within these designated areas.
Effective immediately, NEPZA will significantly bolster its enforcement activities targeting the alleged illegal importation of containers into controlled zones. These enhanced measures will encompass rigorous inspections, meticulous scrutiny of import and export documentation, and coordinated actions with other relevant enforcement agencies. The Authority has affirmed its intention to apply the full spectrum of penalties prescribed by law for any violations.
“Operators who circumvent lawful import and export procedures, mis-declare goods, or attempt to move containers through unauthorised channels should be in no doubt that such conduct will be identified and met with decisive regulatory action,” Ogunyemi stated. He elaborated that these stringent actions are designed to protect the integrity of NEPZA’s operational systems, safeguard public interest, ensure a level playing field for legitimate businesses, and maintain the high standards expected within the FTZ framework.
The NEPZA chief executive warned that illegal importation activities not only undermine lawful commerce but also expose communities to unregulated goods and erode public confidence in the FTZ system. However, he assured compliant operators that NEPZA remains committed to handling regulatory matters with fairness, justice, and transparency. Businesses found to be in violation will face legal consequences, while those operating within the law will continue their activities without undue disruption.
Ogunyemi acknowledged the substantial contributions of compliant operators to the Nigerian economy, noting that the vast majority of businesses within the FTZs conduct their operations with honesty and meet their obligations, thereby fostering a well-regulated trade environment. He stressed that the actions of a few should not tarnish the achievements of the many, and the strengthened enforcement is specifically aimed at rule violators. Furthermore, NEPZA has encouraged operators and zone management to enhance their self-policing mechanisms. The Authority recognises the significant revenue generated by the FTZ scheme and emphasises the necessity of collaborative efforts between the Federal Government, its agencies, and operators to prevent activities that could jeopardise the sector’s progress.
