WhatsApp Business Platform to Implement Per-Message Fees for Corporate Clients from October 1 - Nigeria

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is set to introduce a new pricing structure for its WhatsApp Business Platform, commencing October 1, 2026. This significant policy shift will impose per-message charges on corporate entities utilising the platform for large-scale customer communications, impacting sectors such as banking, fintech, telecommunications, logistics, and major e-commerce operations.

The forthcoming fee model targets service and utility messages sent via the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API. Businesses will incur charges for responses delivered within the standard 24-hour customer service window. Furthermore, utility messages, which encompass essential transactional updates like payment confirmations, order status notifications, and delivery alerts, will also be subject to per-message fees.

This update, as reported by Leadership, will not affect standard WhatsApp users or small businesses operating on the free WhatsApp Business mobile application. However, for larger enterprises, the financial implications necessitate proactive planning. Meta has mandated that companies must link a valid payment method to their accounts by September 30, 2026, to avert potential disruptions in message delivery once the new policy is enacted.

For businesses operating within Nigeria, the financial outlay is projected to be substantial. A chargeable service or utility message is estimated to cost approximately $0.0101, equivalent to roughly ₦14. Marketing messages, which typically involve broader outreach, will command a higher fee of around $0.062 per message, translating to approximately ₦84. This pricing adjustment signals a strategic move by Meta to monetise its business communication services more directly, requiring legal and compliance teams to reassess their customer engagement strategies and associated operational budgets. General counsel and corporate executives must now factor these new costs into their financial planning and explore the most cost-effective methods for maintaining customer communication channels. Investors and business leaders will also need to evaluate the impact on operational expenses for companies heavily reliant on WhatsApp for customer interaction.
