Togo Courts Japanese Investment: Scouting Mission Signals Strategic Economic Partnership Push

A high-level scouting mission comprising Japanese economic operators is set to visit Togo from July 19 to 22, 2026. This strategic engagement underscores Togo’s proactive approach to bolstering bilateral economic ties with Japan and identifying new avenues for investment and commercial collaboration. The visit is anticipated to yield significant opportunities for businesses and investors looking to engage with the West African nation.

The cornerstone of the mission will be a dedicated Business-to-Business (B2B) meeting scheduled for July 20 in Lomé. This forum will convene Togolese and Japanese companies across diverse sectors to explore potential partnerships, co-investment ventures, and commercial cooperation agreements. The initiative is designed to foster direct connections between economic actors from both countries, creating a fertile ground for the development of mutually beneficial joint projects.

This mission, spearheaded by the Togolese Ministry Delegate in charge of Investments, aligns with Togo’s broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment and diversify its international economic partnerships. As Togo finalises its 2026-2031 governmental roadmap, the presence of Japanese business leaders could be instrumental in securing private sector involvement in the nation’s ambitious structural projects planned for the next five years.

Togo and Japan share a long-standing relationship, with diplomatic ties established in 1960, shortly after Togo’s independence. This enduring cooperation has historically focused on key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, education, and health, with a growing emphasis on regional economic integration in recent years.

Conversely, Japanese imports from Togo totalled 6.72 billion yen, with cocoa, coffee, sesame, tea, and recycled non-ferrous metals being the principal commodities. This economic mission is poised to inject renewed dynamism into these business relations and enhance the presence of Japanese investors within the Togolese market.
