The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unequivocally ruled out any extension for the June 30 deadline for filing 2025 income tax returns. The authority has issued a stern warning to taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, that failure to comply by the statutory deadline will result in the imposition of penalties and potential default tax assessments.
The KRA is urging all taxpayers who have yet to submit their annual returns to do so promptly, well before midnight on Tuesday, June 30. The tax authority has stressed that the established deadline is firm and will not be subject to postponement.
Taxpayers who miss the June 30 deadline will be liable for penalties as stipulated under Kenyan tax law. Furthermore, the KRA indicated that such non-compliant entities could face default tax assessments, which are determined by the authority in the absence of a filed return.
While acknowledging that millions of taxpayers have already successfully filed their returns, the KRA cautioned those still to comply against delaying their submissions until the eleventh hour. The authority highlighted the risk of significant traffic on digital platforms during peak periods, which could impede timely submissions.
To facilitate last-minute filers, the KRA has implemented extended operating hours at its contact centre, various service centres, Huduma Centres, and Ushuru Mashinani service points across the nation. Taxpayers have multiple avenues for filing, including the iTax platform, eCitizen, and the USSD service. Comprehensive assistance is also available through the KRA’s contact centre and its official social media channels.
The filing of annual income tax returns remains a mandatory legal obligation for all taxpayers with income tax liabilities. This requirement extends to individuals who may not have a tax payable, as they are still obligated to submit nil returns where applicable. The KRA’s firm stance underscores the importance of timely compliance for all entities operating within Kenya’s tax framework.
