Somalia Anchors Blue Economy Ambitions with Landmark African Ocean Science Accord
Somalia has formally committed to advancing ocean science and sustainable marine resource management by signing the African Call for the Development of Ocean Science. This significant step, taken during the 11th Ocean Conference, underscores Somalia’s strategic intent to leverage its extensive coastline and marine wealth.
The Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Mr. Ahmed Hassan Adam, represented Somalia at a crucial sideline meeting focused on bolstering ocean science, research, and knowledge dissemination. The gathering convened key stakeholders, including the Ambassador of Somalia to Kenya, ministerial delegations, African Union representatives, and leading maritime experts. Discussions centred on the imperative of developing robust ocean research capabilities to ensure effective management of the nation’s vital marine resources.
The joint African call, a seven-point pledge, emerged from these deliberations. Participating governments committed to reinforcing policies that champion ocean science and knowledge, while crucially safeguarding the independence of oceanic research and data.
