Kano High Court Sentences 21-Year-Old to Death by Hanging for Culpable Homicide

A Kano State High Court has convicted and sentenced Umar Idris, aged 21, to death by hanging for the killing of shop owner Sabiu Umar.

Idris, a resident of Farawa Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area, was found guilty of culpable homicide after the prosecution established that he fatally stabbed the 28-year-old victim during a confrontation.

Prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, informed the court that on 2 September 2021, Idris unlawfully entered the victim’s shop at Tsamiya Mariri Quarters, Kano, and stole wedding garments. When the deceased raised an alarm, a struggle ensued, during which Idris attacked him with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries to his neck, shoulder, and other parts of his body.

The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered Idris’s confessional statement, while the defence, led by Muftau Bello, called two witnesses and pleaded for leniency.
