BREAKING: Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu Resigns to Pursue Oyo Governorship Ambition
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally resigned his position in the Federal Government to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated 22 April 2026 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu stated that his decision would take effect from 30 April 2026, to allow for a smooth and orderly transition.
Adelabu expressed “a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a privilege. He noted that his tenure afforded him the chance to contribute to reforms in the power sector, which he described as critical to Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation.
Citing the provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which preclude political office holders from contesting elections while in office, Adelabu explained that his resignation was necessary to enable him fully focus on his governorship ambition. He recalled that his aspiration dates back to 2016 during his service as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, which led to his voluntary resignation from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal.
Adelabu’s exit marks a significant political development ahead of the next electoral cycle, particularly in Oyo State, where he is expected to contest the governorship election.
