The Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta South, Ogun State, Abbas Olalekan, has been arraigned before the Isabo Magistrates’ Court on charges of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion.
His arraignment follows the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, who reportedly died last Tuesday from pregnancy-related complications.
Prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, alleged that the offences occurred between January and March in the Ikereku area of Abeokuta. Olalekan pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
Defence counsel, Bunmi Adelabu, applied for bail citing the constitutional presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Magistrate A.K. Araba granted bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a blood relative and the other gainfully employed. The defendant was ordered remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending perfection of bail conditions.
The matter was adjourned to April 14 for further hearing.
Sources allege that Olalekan and the deceased were in a relationship which led to the pregnancy. Ariyo is said to have died from complications after terminating the pregnancy.
In a statement, NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu confirmed that a staff member is under investigation, expressing deep sadness over the loss of the corps member and extending condolences to her family.
