BOSAN Warns SANs: Stop Using “Dr” and “Professor” Titles from Honorary Degrees

The Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) has issued a stern advisory to its members, warning against the use of the titles “Dr” or “Professor” in professional settings following the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees.

In a circular signed by its secretary, Olumide Sofowora, BOSAN noted that it had received multiple complaints about some Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) introducing themselves in court with titles derived from honorary awards. The body stressed that such practice amounts to misrepresentation and undermines the dignity of the rank of SAN.

Sofowora reminded members of the recent guidelines issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC), which clearly state that recipients of honorary doctorates may append the approved nomenclature, such as Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) or LL.D (h.c.)—after their names, but are not permitted to prefix “Dr.” or claim academic or professional privileges reserved for holders of earned degrees.

He expressed concern that some SANs had gone further to style themselves as “Professors” after receiving honorary degrees, a practice BOSAN described as incompatible with the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners.

BOSAN cautioned that any member found to be parading titles not legitimately earned risks disciplinary action, as such conduct amounts to fraudulent misrepresentation and false claims to nobility. The body urged all SANs to uphold the integrity and honour of their rank by adhering strictly to professional and ethical standards.
