The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has convicted the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Mr. Robert Orya, and sentenced him to ten years’ imprisonment for offences involving the fraudulent diversion of approximately ₦2.4 billion.
Mr. Orya was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 49‑count charge, encompassing breach of trust, fraud, misappropriation of public funds, impersonation, corruption, and abuse of office.
Delivering judgment, Justice Frances Messiri imposed a sentence of ten years’ imprisonment on each count, with the terms ordered to run concurrently.
The offences were established to have occurred during Orya’s tenure as Managing Director of NEXIM Bank between 2011 and 2016. The court found that he diverted bank funds through shell entities, notably Luxurium Leisure Services Limited, and fraudulently procured the disbursement of loans, including ₦488 million to Treasure Mix Construction Limited, under false pretences.
The EFCC had first brought Mr. Orya before the court in November 2021, initiating the prosecution that culminated in this conviction.
