Brazil’s Apex Court Upholds Conviction, Orders Ex‑President Bolsonaro to Begin 27‑Year Jail Term
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Brazil directed former President Jair Bolsonaro to immediately commence his 27‑year custodial sentence, following his conviction for allegedly orchestrating a failed plot to retain power after losing the country’s last general election.
The order was issued shortly after the Court dismissed an initial appeal filed by Bolsonaro’s legal team, which had sought to overturn or suspend the conviction. With the appeal rejected, the justices held that the former president must begin serving his sentence without further delay.
Pursuant to the ruling, Bolsonaro is to be transferred to a federal police facility in Brasília, where he will serve the initial phase of his imprisonment. The decision represents one of the most significant judicial sanctions against a former Brazilian head of state, underscoring the Court’s resolve to safeguard democratic institutions.
Although Bolsonaro’s counsel has indicated an intention to pursue further appellate remedies, the Court’s pronouncement requires that he commence his sentence while such processes are ongoing.
