The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate approved for clemency under the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy exercise has been released, as the process remains at the final administrative stage.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Fagbemi explained that the current phase involves a standard review to ensure that all names and recommendations strictly comply with established legal and procedural requirements before the official release instruments are issued. He added that the final step after approval by the Council of State involves issuing the formal implementation document, which is forwarded to the Controller-General of Corrections for necessary action.
The Minister emphasised that the review stage is part of the government’s commitment to transparency, due diligence, and adherence to the rule of law. He urged the public to remain patient, assuring that there was no delay in the process. “The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness,” Fagbemi stated, while appreciating Nigerians for their vigilance and constructive engagement in strengthening justice and governance.
