Senate Confirms Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

Nigeria’s new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan has denied being a member of the legal team of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 Presidential Election Tribunal.

Amupitan dispelled the widespread publication linking him to President Tinubu and his ruling All Progressives Congress, when he appeared before the Senate for confirmation of his appointment on Thursday.

The Professor of Law, and SENIOR Advocate of Nigeria comes highly recommended for the job and he hopes to rely on his impressive resume to deliver on the tough responsibility resting on his shoulders.

Amupitan’s nomination had sparked a bit of controversy after a widespread publication linked him to the legal team of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Amupitan denies any such connection with Tinubu and his governing All Progressives Congress.

Starting with a litmus test in the Anambra Governorship election in November, Amupitan vows to restore confidence in the credibility of elections as well as safeguard the independence of the electoral commission.

To succeed-Amupitan seeks to invest heavily on logistics and technology to eliminate infractions often associated with elections in the country with specific reference to IREV, and the confusion that came with it in 2023.

Amupitan who hails from Kogi State takes over from Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the 6th INEC Chairman since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
