Niger State Judiciary Recruits 100 New Judicial Staff, Including Magistrates and Sharia Court Judges, Drops Four Over Failed Exams

The Niger State Judiciary has expanded its workforce with the employment of 100 new judicial staff, including 10 magistrates, following the approval of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

The development was disclosed in Minna by Rt. Hon. Adamu Usman, Chairman of the Sub‑Committee on Information of the Niger State Judicial Service Commission (NJSC), during a press briefing.

According to Hon. Usman, the recruitment exercise was conducted transparently and without controversy, covering a wide range of positions. These include 10 Sharia Court Judges, 30 Legal Research Assistants, 20 Programme Analysts, 15 Interpreters, and 15 Executive Officers.

He further revealed that four staff members—three from the High Court and one from the Sharia Court of Appeal—have been directed to disengage from service after failing their promotion examinations on three consecutive occasions. This action, he noted, is in strict compliance with Order 8 Rule (4)(f) of the NJSC Regulations, 2025.

In a related development, the NJSC has constituted a committee to investigate allegations of serious misconduct against one Mohammed Shaba. The allegations stem from a video circulated on social media, allegedly disparaging the Chief Judge of Niger State and the judiciary at large.

The investigation, prompted by a report from the Chief Registrar of the Sharia Court of Appeal, will be handled by a four‑member sub‑committee tasked with conducting inquiries and ensuring that the accused officer is given a fair hearing.

Additionally, Hon. Usman announced that the NJSC has approved retirement notifications for four staff members of the High Court and six from the Sharia Court of Appeal. He also confirmed that death certificates have been issued for two deceased staff members from both courts.
