Court Stops Fubara’s Impeachment, Orders State Lawmakers, CJ to Maintain status quo

A Rivers State High Court sitting at Isiokpo, has stopped the state House of Assembly and the Chief Justice of the state from initiating impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Fubara had through his counsel, Mr. Damian Okoro, SAN, sought an interim order stopping the state Assembly from going on with the impeachment process.

The governor in the suit number IHC/230/CS/2023, joined Rivers State House of Assembly, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Chief Justice of the state as defendants.

Okoro had prayed the court for an interim injunction stopping the Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, Deputy Speaker, the Clerk of the House and the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi from carrying out any action with respect to the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Ben Whyte, granted the interim order restraining the defendants from carrying out any actions with respect to the impeachment of Governor Fubara pending the determination of the Motion on Notice the motion on notice.

The court, meanwhile, adjourned further hearing the matter till November 14, 2023.
